Immersive Learning in Vail Valley
MOUNTAIN-INSPIRED DESIGN
The Walking Mountains Science Center combines regional architectural character with climate-responsive design to support experiential environmental learning. Influenced by native alpine landscapes as well as local solar exposure and wind conditions, the campus is composed of a series of ascending forms that echo the layered profile of the surrounding Gore Range.
LEARNING THROUGH THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
The campus is designed as an active extension of the educational mission, using the buildings and landscape themselves as teaching tools. Sustainable systems and low-impact design strategies are integrated throughout the project, shaping both performance and user experience. Naturally lit and passively cooled interior spaces maintain strong visual and physical connections to the outdoors, while a carefully detailed envelope responds to the demands of the high-elevation climate.
ROOTED IN PLACE
Deep roof overhangs, sheltered outdoor rooms, dispersed learning spaces, and a connected trail system invite students and visitors to engage directly with the surrounding environment. By extending educational activities outdoors, the design reduces reliance on enclosed building area, minimizing resource consumption and preserving habitat. This approach strengthens the connection to the ecology of Buck Creek while creating more immersive and adaptable learning experiences.
