Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
Yosemite National Park CA
Restoring Yosemite’s Giants
ENHANCING RESILIENCY
Home to more than 500 giant sequoias, Mariposa Grove is the largest remaining sequoia grove within Yosemite National Park. Over decades of human activity, natural water systems and forest dynamics critical to the long-term health and regeneration of the grove have been disrupted. This project focuses on restoring ecological function and improving the grove’s capacity to adapt to both existing environmental pressures and future climate-related challenges.
WELCOMING VISITORS RESPONSIBLY
The design enhances public access while carefully safeguarding sensitive ecological and cultural landscapes. Former vehicle circulation and parking areas have been transformed into an accessible, pedestrian-focused visitor experience that allows people to engage more directly with restored wetlands and the majestic forest ecosystem.
REESTABLISHING NATURAL SYSTEMS
The restoration strategy supports long-term ecological health by reactivating key natural processes throughout the grove. Efforts include restoring hydrologic connectivity, expanding suitable habitat conditions for giant sequoias, implementing ongoing prescribed fire management, and creating educational and recreational experiences that encourage stewardship while minimizing impacts on fragile resources.
